We have just come to the end of the Euro 2020 (in 2021) tournament and on this bleak Monday morning, I’m pretty sure the entire nation is feeling the same level of sadness.
Personally, I’m not a football fan. My go to sport is Formula 1. Always has been, always will be.
However, when it comes to major tournaments such as the Euro’s or World Cups, I do what a lot of us do and jump in to show my loyalty to the country and genuinely jump around shouting at the TV just as much as the next person. Anyone watching in through the windows would think I was a full-on fanatic of the sport.
Because when it comes to watching our national team fight to the last moment to “bring it home”, I’m there. Completely and 100% in there!
Last night, we all watched. All jumped around. All shouted our excitement at the TV.
And then it happened. We went into a penalty shoot-out. The moment we all dread and fear.
We were all devastated to watch as Saka missed, and Italy won the fight.
Saka himself was visibly destroyed by this. And I can’t blame him. He knew the pressure that was on him right there. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.
Was it his fault? No. Of course it wasn’t.
He was under insane pressure. The likes of which most of us will never know or feel. He simply didn’t manage to put a ball between two posts. That’s it. It’s simple really.
It’s a game. It’s not life or death. It’s just a game. One that everyone felt huge passion for. But.
It is a game…
I did however sit there and suggest I ordered Sky Sports and got myself into it more. Purely because I’d enjoyed the past few weeks so much, I thought it would be worth picking up another sport.
After it was all over, we tidied up our mess of Sunday evening frantic football munch, sorted the dogs and went to bed.
Personally, I slept like a log!
I was worn out after that, and of course a couple of whisky’s, I was done.
Monday morning started much the same as any other. And then I remembered why I will NOT be ordering Sky Sports and getting myself into Football.
For some reason, this sport brings out the idiots. The violent, racist haters that ruin elements of our country for the rest of us.
Firstly, there was the violence of those at the beginning of the game, essentially breaking and entering to get into the stadium.
And then the racism kicked in. The nasty comments just because someone who isn’t white, missed a penalty.
Really??
The year is 2021. Not only should we be living in a society where this doesn’t exist, but we’ve just gone through a pandemic that realistically should have bought us all closer together.
But, as has always been the case, moronic stupidity evolves and ends up with the likes of Saka being abused on social media. Not just Saka, but anyone who doesn’t have white skin. I say this because of the words being used. Of which I personally will not put down on paper. But you all know exactly what I mean.
One such person took to using that word on Twitter. Then, someone found that person on LinkedIn and called them out. Brilliant!
The most likely situation here is that they were insanely drunk when they wrote the racist tweet. (It was just after 11pm on Sunday evening, just after it all finished)
I imagine they woke this morning and probably realised their mistake, as it is now probably about to directly affect them in their working life. Good. Alcohol does not give you the right to be racist, violent and/or nasty.
In Any Way.
One of the most frustrating things about this…
Regardless of skin colour. If any of those players who missed, had scored...
And England had won…
Would I have to be writing this? Probably not. Because all those idiots would be calling them all heroes. Not anything else…
To our national team…
We have loved what you’ve given us over the past few weeks. Please keep trying. And please ignore the minority. Because they are just that. Minor.
And remember…
FAILURE IS A BRUISE NOT A TATTOO
